Support Your Literary Community With a Gift to Hayden's Ferry Review
A Giving Tuesday Message From Our Editorial Team
Dear Subscriber,
Thank you, first off, for being a loyal supporter of Hayden’s Ferry Review. Founded in 1986, HFR remains one of the only literary journals rooted in the Southwest. As an editorial team, we pride ourselves on our values of inclusivity and multiplicity, and seek to uplift emerging writers and artists. Our mission is to curate an exceptional journal that takes risks and challenges while engaging readers emotionally and artistically.

Through HFR, we mentor students to be editors, curators, and literary change-makers. We also represent global viewpoints through HFR’s Thousand Languages Project (TLP). Students and community writers working with TLP translate works from HFR’s rich archives, representing languages across the world as well as the indigenous languages of Arizona. The work HFR does is important and irreplaceable. Yet like many literary journals, we operate on a shoestring and are continually in danger of folding or shrinking due to lack of support.
I’m writing to you today to ask for your help and to encourage you to donate to HFR’s first-ever year-end campaign.
Your support, no matter how much, helps HFR continue to provide opportunities for emerging writers, artists, and literary citizens. In addition:
Your gift of $25 supports HFR craft talks. Held online so writers from around the country can participate at no cost, these popular events give our contributors c chance to share their work and wisdom.
Your gift of $40 underwrites the annual HFR Prize for emerging writers, a competitive opportunity that includes both a cash reward and publication.
Your gift of $100 offers education and mentorship through HFR’s year-round class in literary editing and publishing.
Your gift of $250 funds HFR’s biannual Indigenous Poets Prize, a competitive award with categories for both youth and adult writers that provides support and recognition to indigenous poets from Arizona and around the nation.
Your gift of $500 builds literary legacy by supporting the HFR print journal, released twice a year and noted for its beautiful artwork as well as its compelling literary content.
HFR’s Lasting Impact
2024 ASU Dean’s Medallist for the College of Arts and Sciences, Chris Hoshnic, credits his involvement with HFR and TLP as the reason for his success: “HFR and TLP opened the door to poetry as a possibility to explore creativity, philosophy, and my own relationship Diné Bizaad, ” Chris writes.
The successes of Chris and other students like him capture the heart of HFR’s work. Help us keep HFR in print and online with your contribution today.
HFR staff work tirelessly to ensure excellent literary content is published and preserved and to build future generations of writers, editors, storytellers, and literary professionals in a world with so much change—from technological advances such as AI to worldwide global conflicts—journals like ours that present a multitude of voices and perspectives nurture our shared resilience and humanity. Help us keep building HFR into a journal of national reach and significance while building the skills and vision of generations of ASU students. We know how lucky we are to have supporters like you as part of our community!
Thank you for reading, and best wishes for the New Year,
Warmly,
Susan Nguyen
