HFR Nov Newsletter: Subs Open, Craft Chat + Other Events!
Everything that's coming up in November!
Dear Readers,
Hello there! I’m Brennie Shoup, and I’m thrilled to be HFR’s Fiction Editor this year.
We’re very close to launching our 75th Issue. While I’m notably excited about our upcoming fiction stories—including a surreal flash piece, a bizarre short story, and our talented contest winner—we have phenomenal poetry, translations, essays, and art to share with you, too! It’s truly been an honor to work with such a talented team, especially when we’re only twenty-five issues away from reaching the coveted centennial mark.
As we open for our 76th Issue, we will continue to do our best to provide work that “takes risks, challenges readers, and engages us emotionally and artistically.” I can’t wait to read stories for our themed portfolio (“maximalism”!), where writers are encouraged to push themselves to fill the page to bursting.
Be on the lookout for HFR’s special events—we have a Craft Chat and our launch coming up! In addition to our physical issue, we also have a web issue in the works: “On Desire,” inspired by Oscar Wilde’s quote, “In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.”
With that, I leave you (hopefully) anticipating what HFR has in store!
Best,
Brennie Shoup, Fiction Editor
HFR Now Accepting Submissions!
Send us your work!
Open Subs Period Nov 1 - Nov 30
We’re now open for submissions for both Issue 76, our spring/summer 2025 print issue, and our themed Spring Web Issue: On Desire.
The details:
The theme of our Spring Web Issue is On Desire. We invite you to be inspired by the words of Oscar Wilde: “In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” Find more details here.
We’re accepting general (un-themed) submissions in all genres for Issue 76, our spring/summer 2025 print issue.
In the print issue, we’re also hoping to include a special folio on the theme of Maximalism, featuring work that celebrates more is more for the sake of more. If you feel that your piece fits this theme (see more details on our website), just check the respective box on the submission form. Even if the work is not quite right for the folio’s theme, we will still consider it for Issue 76!
We’re offering 100 free submissions for underrepresented writers in all genres.
We’ll be capping general submissions in fiction and poetry at 500, and nonfiction subs at 400, so submit early if you can. (General art submissions are closed until further notice.)
Please submit to only one call for submissions at a time.
See more info about our themes and the full submission guidelines on our website:
